Instigating divorce proceedings can take place when one of five legally-recognised reasons is cited: unreasonable behaviour, adultery, desertion, living apart for over two years (with mutual agreement) or living apart for more than five years (mutual agreement not required).
An uncontested divorce can be fairly straightforward and may not require court attendance, providing both parties can agree on care for any children, the division of money and assets, and the actual reason for the divorce.
Alternatively, separation may be the preferred option for those wishing for more time to make a definite decision about their relationship or due to religious reasons.
