The Highly Skilled Migrants Programme (HSMP) enables a person from outside the European Economic Area (EEA) to work for an employer in the UK or to be self-employed. The person working for an employer is not required to have a fixed job offer or other work before they arrive in the UK. Applicants under HSMP are free to change employers when they wish, and to work as consultants or start up their own business.
Qualifying for Highly Skilled status depends on points awarded for a number of attributes. Since December 2006, points have been awarded for academic qualifications and on the basis of previous salary, with additional points available for those who have worked in the UK before, and for younger applicants. It is also necessary to demonstrate proficiency in English.
It is possible to apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain once you have been in the UK for five years as Highly Skilled Migrant although the government has indicated that it may reduce this period in future.
