Many people wish to become a British Citizen, and for a variety of reasons. Adams regularly receives enquires from people who wish to know whether their family or personal history means that they are or could become a British Citizen. For those people who are settled in the UK and have Indefinite Leave to Remain, or who are a European national and have permanent residence in the UK, it is possible to stay in the UK without any time limit. However, many people wish to become a British Citizen especially if they have made this country their permanent home.
There are three ways to become a British Citizen. The first and most obvious is to be born one. The second is to be registered as one, and the third is to be naturalised as one.
In some circumstances somebody not born a British Citizen can automatically become one without having to be registered or naturalised. One example of this is if a child is adopted by parents who are British Citizens. On the whole however, laws concerning British nationality are complex and depend on a combination of where you were born, when you were born and the nationality of your parents.
Naturalisation is one way for adults not born in this country to become British. People with IDLR may naturalise as British Citizens if they fulfil certain residence requirements. In order to do so it is now necessary to demonstrate knowledge of the language and of life in the UK, and to be of ‘good character.’ Registration is the only way for children to become British, and this can be used for adults in particular circumstances.
